OCA-GLA and Nü House Invites You to a Special Asian Pacific American Heritage Month event:
WE LOVE L.A. CHINATOWN: A Preview Film Screening & Panel Discussion Exploring the Past, Present, and Future of a Unique L.A. Community
Since the mid-1800s, L.A. Chinatown is where harsh realities and fantasy have co-existed. It's been the entry-point and home for thousands of working class immigrants and small business owners; the exoticized location for nightlife and Hollywood film fantasies, the site of numerous art and music movements (e.g., the 70s/80s LA punk music scene), and the workplace and inspiration for numerous visual and performing artists to this day. Join us for a lively exploration of this special neighborhood as it faces development, COVID-19, and numerous other challenges.
Featuring a special preview screening of the short film "Street Angel," a beautiful and poetic reflection on L.A. Chinatown by artist Michelle Sui (22 min.)
Followed by a Panel Discussion with:
Michelle Sui, Filmmaker/Performance Artist, discussing her new film and her reflections on Chinatown
Eugene Moy of the Chinese Historical Society of Southern California, discussing the past history, current developmental conflicts, and efforts to preserve the community of LA Chinatown
Lydia Lin, co-owner of Steep LA Tea Room. Lydia is an Asian American entrepreneur bringing new energy into the neighborhood, and adapting to face the impact of COVID-19. (See www.steepla.com)
