About the Book:
Originally published in 1958, “Umbrella” is about a young Japanese American girl named Momo who receives new rubber boots and an umbrella. She waits for the rain every day, wishing to use her new gifts! Beautifully illustrated by author Taro Yashima, the book portrays the importance of patience and celebrates a child’s excitement.
About the author:
Taro Yashima (1908-1994) was the pseudonym for Japanese artist Atsushi Iwamatsu. He was born in Kagoshima, Japan and was raised in Kyushu. Yashima studied art in Tokyo and moved to the United States to continue his learning. Yashima’s work as an illustrator and author of children’s books was fueled by his passion for encouraging curiosity and joy.
