COVID-19 & Rising Anti-Asian Prejudice - Threats to Public Safety, Community Organizing, and Mental Health Responses

OCA-GLA presents: COVID-19 & Rising Anti-Asian Prejudice - Threats to Public Safety, Community Organizing, and Mental Health Responses

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in an upsurge in discriminatory microagressions and racist attacks against Asian Americans of diverse backgrounds. The situation has been exacerbated by the President and other high profile individuals, such as several FOX News Hosts, and even "liberal" commentators such as political comedian/host Bill Maher, who have insisted on calling COVID-19 the "Chinese Virus" and the "Wuhan Virus," among other such terms.

This panel will discuss current and potential responses by government, community organizations, individuals, and allies to the growing anxiety and danger experienced by those in the Asian American community in this latest iteration of anti-Asian sentiment that has a long and sordid history. We will be speaking to community leaders who will address policy responses, community organizing responses, and mental health issues.

Panelists include:
Roland Hwang - OCA National VP Public Affairs
Robin Toma - Exec. Dir., LA County Human Relations Commission
Manjusha "Manju" P. Kulkarni - Executive Director, A3PCON
Laurie Williamson, LMFT - Pacific Asian Counseling Services

Moderated by: George Yin - OCA-GLA
