Housing Rights Legal Clinic

  • Asian Pacific Community Fund of Southern California 1145 Wilshire Boulevard Los Angeles, CA, 90017 United States (map)

Advancing Justice – LA helps with a variety of housing related issues, with a focus on those helping those who are immigrants or have limited proficiency with English. Tenants can receive assistance with eviction, landlord-tenant disputes, lease disputes, habitability, security deposit and other tenant rights. Advancing Justice – LA also assists homeowners who are facing foreclosure for reasons other than missing monthly payments or who are victims of loan modification or home improvement scams. Advancing Justice – LA will host monthly clinics in conjunction with local bar associations to address many of these issues, and to also connect the most at-risk individuals with needed services when faced with possible homelessness.

In 2013, Advancing Justice - LA partnered with four other non-profit legal service organizations to form the California Consumer Justice Coalition.  Other Coalition members are: Bet Tzedek, Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles, Legal Aid Society of Orange County, and Public Counsel.  The Coalition hosts regular legal clinics at various locations in Los Angeles County, and has created a website that provides information for homeowners and consumers: www.caconsumerjustice.org.

In 2009, Advancing Justice - LA responded to the housing crisis by helping homeowners who faced the loss of their home to foreclosure.  Advancing Justice - LA has full-time bilingual staff who work with low income and limited English speaking homeowners who need legal assistance in their battle to keep their homes.  Assistance includes preparing loan modification applications, negotiating on behalf of homeowners with banks, and helping homeowners who are victims of modification assistance scams.
